Suburban Wirral has many large estate pubs that are popular with Football fans. Given that many come via the southern motorway link I travelled to one such “village” that has a choice of these pubs and found the best it had was the Bamborough. Unlike some of its near neighbours there is an instant welcome and care for the stranger who visits. Quick service and a friendly smile set the tone and the choice of ale that changes regularly met with my familiar home palate
This pub is a classic sports pub of the Sky sports variety. Decorated in the modern style and with large screens it would be perfect for the pre match premiership offering. It is easy to imagine that it will be packed on those long Sunday afternoon sessions that can seemingly last all day when the fancy takes. On other days the lunchtime clientele consists of family meal groups, often elderly fathers footing the bill. By the evening the locals come in for regular sessions, they could have a private section each if they so wished. Most will gravitate to the more traditional front bar for locals chat and banter. It is a very friendly place, somewhere that could easily become a home from home. Not in the cosy back - street way but in the style of the ever more common Greene King estate mode. My advice is to use this if you and your friends are driving to the game and want easy food choices and a leisurely drive on to the ground. Don’t expect a real ale fest, do expect some space to sit and relax.

The Stork Hotel is a pub that throws up surprises of the best variety in every visit. It is a really big real ale pub in a grand building that has true architectural merit. The four ales are ever - changing, so quickly that I record here only those on at lunchtime, the evening menu is likely to be totally different, such is the turnover. Enthusiasm for top notch ale pours out of the William Morris wallpaper. The warmth and humour shouts out from the many corners of this multi - roomed gem.
Much of the fun comes from the staff and their keenness to promote traditional ales from independent breweries. Revered as the best pub that Birkenhead has to offer, the locals come from all over the Wirral using the metro that arrives nearby. Beer trips were being planned with the regulars; the beer sounded great but camping in Snowdonia would evoke too many childhood nightmares for this pampered poodle. Dave orchestrates the beer selections to a tee. He will also gladly tell you of the remarkable discoveries made as the pub has been restored to its glorious past. The removing of a carpet unearthed majestic tiled floors, the opening of spaces discovered the news room that is now so smoke - free you can positively smell the past. There are four equally splendid rooms; the old boys congregate in the front tap room, the luncheon - taking office workers retire to the high - ceilinged lounges off to the rear. Add in a great garden for a barbeque or ale festival, and what you find is a great real ale pub.

This highly recommended street - corner “village” local is very convenient for those arriving via the M53. Timber - framed lounges make up the bars around the central bar, all brass and country kitchen style. It has a loyal set of locals who relish it being a proper pub. They enjoy a range of national favourites supplemented by regional guests. My visit found family groups and town office workers enjoying the good pub food. Beware if you prefer baseball caps or shell suits, the Governess will not make you as welcome as her real ale crew. Quite right, although in a pub I owned, I might in one of my more fantastic moments, add in Blackthorn insignia or anything red (There goes half my sales then) Ann was very helpful, particularly in pointing me in the right direction to town centre pubs. I would certainly return. Oh for the days of Friday nights watching Tranmere away
UPDATE;  Nothing has changed but the friendliness gets even better.
